The birds nest fern is native to the East Coast of Australia, in the Cape York area. It’s name derives from the large, nest shaped rosette of fronds and its ability to grow on trees. Bird’s nest ferns have a striking upright vase shape, and the fronds can reach up to 1.5m long.

How to Grow Birds Nest Ferns in a Garden
Location
Find a location with part sun to filtered sun, protected from the harsh afternoon sun.Â
Planting
Prepare the area by digging in a soil improver. Dig a hole twice as wide and to the same depth as the root ball. Remove the plant from the pot, gently tease the roots and position in the planting hole. Backfill & gently firm down. Form a raised, doughnut shaped ring to help keep the water where it is needed. Water in well to settle soil, and keep soil moist for several weeks while it establishes. Mulch around the base, ensuring to keep it away from the base of the plant.

Pot & Position
Choose a pot twice the size of the plant and find a position with part shade to filtered sun, protected from the afternoon sun.

Fill the pot with quality potting mix, remove the plant from the container and gently tease the roots. Position in the planting hole and backfilll. Gently firm down and water in well.Â

Water deeply once or twice a week until established.

Tips for caring for Birds Nest Fern
- Prune damaged or dead fronts to maintain its upright appearance
- You can propagate by cutting through the centre of the crown with a saw. Do this in autumn when the weather is cooler
- Moist, well drained soil is a must.
- They can be grown in cooler climates if a protected microclimate can be created.
- Mulch around the root zone to keep soil moist
