Summer is the toughest season for our plants and lawn thanks to the longer days and hot, dry conditions. Summer is the peak growing period for most lawn types, and the key to keeping your lawn healthy throughout summer is a combination of nutrients, irrigation and care.
Check your irrigation schedule
Watering in the heat of the day will cause a lot of the moisture to evaporate. Set your irrigation schedule to the morning or evening, after the peak heat of the day.
If there has been humid conditions overnight, do not water in the morning as this can lead to diseases.
Adjust your mowing
To protect your lawn, avoid mowing in the middle of the day or during peak heat as it will damage the lawn.
Rake away any clippings as they can trap humid air and cause fungus issues, as well as blocking the flow of air to the roots and soil.
Fertilise early
Give your lawn a good feed with quality slow release fertiliser early in the season to prevent burning.
Aerate your lawn
Aeration involves perforating the soil with small holes to allow air, water and nutrients to penetrate the grass roots. This will ensure a healthier lawn throughout summer.
Apply a wetting agent
Applying a wetting agent will ensure your irrigation is effective & water soaks into the soil. It also assist with the soils ability to hold nutrients and increase the drought tolerance of your lawn.
Check your equipment
A sharp set of mower blades will reduce the harm & stress to your grass. Check your blades and replace or sharpen if necessary.
